Brake problem, trying to figure out the issue....? So my girlfriends car is pretty messed up, first, her muffler cracked, then shortly after/before her brakes BARELY work. I change my own pads/rotors and do so for other so I know a little bit about brakes. I checked the brake fluid and its full. Her pads and rotors are only 6 months old and there's plenty of material left on the pads. I did some further investigation and I squeezed the brake hose on each of the two front tires while my girlfriend pumped the brakes. The drivers side hose showed signs of pressure, the passenger side diddnt, it was as if the push of the brakes diddnt pressurize the fluid at all on that side, but if there was a leak in the hose/break line, she would be loosing fluid and she's not. I was wondering if this could be an issue with the combination valve, because thats what im thinking. Im trying to learn a little bit more about it so I dont get screwed by a mechanic, what is the average price for such a repair? (2000 saturn SL1 btw) car insurance. Sterling . How to Remove Paint From Aluminum WheelsAs painted aluminum wheels age, they can start to look dingy and chipped if they are not properly cared for, requiring that they be either repainted or refinished if they are to look their best. Stripping the paint from aluminum wheels is relatively easy, though it does require strong chemicals. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Masking tape Paint stripper Steel wool Wire brushes Step by Step : 1 Remove the wheels from the car if they are still in use. 2 Remove the tires. This step is optional, but stripping the paint from the wheels is easier if the tires are off. 3 Pressure wash the wheels on the inside and out to remove any dirt and debris. 4 Tape off any areas on the wheel that are polished or have a special finish to avoid damage during the stripping process. Paint stripper is very caustic and can cause damage to polished, chromed or machined surfaces. If the tires are still on the wheel, tape these off as well to avoid damaging the rubber. 5 Spray on a layer of paint stripper. Let the stripper sit on the paint for 10 to 15 minutes or until the paint starts to bubble. 6 Scrape the paint off with a plastic scraper and a wire brush. 7 Scrub nooks and crannies with fine steel wool to remove paint that does not come off with the paint stripper. 8 Repeat the process of spraying on the paint stripper and then scraping the paint off until the paint is stripped from the wheels. 9 Use a power washer to thoroughly rinse the old paint and the stripper from the wheels. Tips & Warnings Paint stripper is very caustic and burns when it comes into contact with skin. Use common sense and wear eye protection, hand protection and a respirator when applying the paint stripper to avoid contact with it.
Sterling . Homemade Aluminum Wheel PolishCar-cleaning products can be expensive, especially when it comes to tire cleaner and polish. Instead of paying high-priced retail costs, consider making a homemade aluminum wheel polish from inexpensive ingredients. These homemade solutions cost a fraction of retail cleaning product prices, and work just as effectively. Wash Wheels Thoroughly A basic car wash solution will break up any dirt and debris, and should be used to wash the entire car before concentrating on the wheels themselves. There are several homemade solutions that can be made with inexpensive ingredients. In a bucket, mix a solution of one gallon water, 10 drops liquid dish detergent, and 12 tsp. of powdered dish detergent. Use a sponge or soft cloth to wash the entire car, then rinse thoroughly to remove any dirt or soap residue. A simple solution of bleach and water works well in restoring the shine of aluminum wheels. In a bucket, mix one gallon water and 1/2 cup bleach. Stir, and work into the tires with a soft bristled brush. Wear gloves when applying this solution, as bleach is a strong ingredient that can sometimes cause skin irritation. Rinse the tires with the hose, dry with a soft cloth, and your aluminum wheels will be clean and polished with only a minimal amount of elbow grease. Liquid dish detergent works well to restore the shine of aluminum wheels, without leaving behind a greasy streaked residue. Borax works to clean the wheels and break up dirt and debris that collects in the tires during road travel. In a bucket, pour one gallon of water, add 10 drops of liquid dish detergent, 1/4 cup of borax, and an optional tsp. of lemon juice for scented solution. Work the solution into the wheels with a scrub brush, and rinse with the hose. Finally, wipe with a soft cloth to dry the wheels. Aluminum Wheel Polish Mineral Spirits and Jewelers Rouge polish aluminum wheels quickly and effectively. Jewelers Rouge is readily available at most auto supply stores and truck stops. This substance comes in brick form, and needs to be broken up into powder form to polish aluminum wheels. Use a knife or hammer to break apart a handful of the rouge, and place in a bowl. Add 2 cups of mineral spirits, and stir. An optional 2 spoonfuls of lemon juice will assist in oxidation and allow the wheels to polish more easily. Use a fine-grain buffing pad to apply the mixture, and work in small circular motions until you've polished the entire wheel. Rinse the tire to remove any residue, then dry with a soft, lint-free cloth. A rum and olive oil combination also works well to polish aluminum wheels. After washing and drying the wheels, mix a solution of one part rum, one part olive oil. Apply with a fine-grain buffing pad working in small circular motions. Wash and dry the wheels thoroughly. Current enters and leaves the distributor via the coil and spark plug wires that run through holes in the cap. Chapter 12 shows you how to remove the distributor cap so that you can get a closer look at what's inside. It also tells you which types of distributors should not be tampered with. Non-electronic Electronic The rotor The rotor (see Figure 5-14) sits atop the distributor shaft inside the distributor. As the distributor shaft turns, the rotor rotates with it and points toward the terminal at the base of each spark plug wire so that each plug can fire in the correct order. For example, when it's pointing at the terminal of the wire leading to your Number 1 spark plug, it directs the current to that spark plug at precisely the time when the fuel/air mixture in the Number 1 cylinder is waiting to be exploded.
